I may be prejudiced, but is this photo cute or what?? Adelaide is as pretty as her Mama, but she sure seems to have Sam's glint in her eye! I can't wait to see her next month.
Thomas Fogarty: Joshua Slocum Thomas Fogarty is not too well known today. In the early years of the 20th century he and his colleague George Brandt Bridgman were popular and influential instructors at the Art Students' League in New York City. Norman Rockwell was one of Fogarty's pupils. Thomas Fogarty was competent in several mediums but especially noted for his pen and ink work, particularly his illustrations for 'Sailing Alone Around the World' by Joshua Slocum . I don't have a photo of Fogarty but I can offer some pages from the Slocum book, scanned from installments which appeared in issues of The Century Magazine for 1898. Click on image to enlarge the title page. Captain Slocum was already famous in the 1880s as skipper (and part-owner) of the famous clipper ship Northern Light before he took Spray around the world singlehandedly. Fogarty's illustration depicts Slocum with calking tools in hand being confronted by locals at the Fairhaven boatyard wher...
As the "new normal" NFL season is upon us, my Facebook friends have been posting a lot lately (again) on both side of the argument about standing or not standing for the national anthem. I get it. I mean I get both sides. I didn't back in 2016 when Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem. Every so often we are blessed with house guests. This summer Augustine Tawiah (Dean of the Ghana Bible College where Tammie and I taught earlier this year) and his wife Lynn (a Memphis native), are multi-tasking. Augustine is taking a statistics course at the University of Memphis and Lynn is taking a teachers orientation and team-building course (she teaches at the American International School in Accra, Ghana.) These two dear friends show the Lord in all they do and I always learn so much from each of them. They never stay long enough. Another Ghanaian friend Gabriel (minister and elder at the 1000-member congregation in Kumasi) who Tammie and met in February, also visited us last week. What a gentle, precious soul he is and such a godly man. I feel humbled in his presence and his prayers of praise and thanksgiving will bless me for many years to come. God never ceases to amaze me with His goodness especially when he gives us brothers and sisters in Him. No matter how far apar...
