Happy Birthday, Sam!

It's so hard to believe my "baby" is now 25 years old! And even has a baby girl of his own. Samuel James Braddock was born at 0730 on 1 July 1982 at Tripler Army Medical Center Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii. That afternoon, a nurse came into our room and said, "You need to go look outside, there's a double rainbow. It's beautiful!" She was right. No matter that I would see a rainbow 5 out of 7 days every week, they never ceased to thrill me, and apparently the nurse felt that way too. And that rainbow, like Sam, seemed to hold a special promise.

Sam has always been my outgoing child, inviting people at the mall to dinner, never-met-a stranger guy. He's funny, talented, and musical (beautiful tenor voice, plays guitar). I love the way he connects with people and the way he encourages them. Everyone is important to him and he is a good friend to his friends. He is a wonderful and loving husband, father, and son. And most importantly, he is a godly man.

What a beautiful blessing he is to my life, my son.

I SOLEMNLY SWEAR THAT I WILL SUPPORT AND DEFEND...

 As the "new normal" NFL season is upon us, my Facebook friends have been posting a lot lately (again) on both side of the argument about standing or not standing for the national anthem. I get it. I mean I get both sides.  I didn't back in 2016 when Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem. I was among the scoffers saying how un-American and disrespectful it was to the flag, to those who served in the military, to our country. I even looked up the US Code 36 § 301 which states: (A) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note; (B) members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and (C) all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with ...

House Guests

Every so often we are blessed with house guests. This summer Augustine Tawiah (Dean of the Ghana Bible College where Tammie and I taught earlier this year) and his wife Lynn (a Memphis native), are multi-tasking. Augustine is taking a statistics course at the University of Memphis and Lynn is taking a teachers orientation and team-building course (she teaches at the American International School in Accra, Ghana.) These two dear friends show the Lord in all they do and I always learn so much from each of them. They never stay long enough. Another Ghanaian friend Gabriel (minister and elder at the 1000-member congregation in Kumasi) who Tammie and met in February, also visited us last week. What a gentle, precious soul he is and such a godly man. I feel humbled in his presence and his prayers of praise and thanksgiving will bless me for many years to come.
